First completed project for 2012. What do you think about the black and white color scheme?

Lots of attention to unique details makes this kitchen beyond ordinary. The configuration remained the same. . . only cosmetic changes. Can you spot them?
BEFORE
AFTER

Wait, you did all this in the last two days? I'm still getting my bearings on the new year. Also, most of us had the last two days off. Such an overachiever. Having said all that, I love the wall, but the black-and-red kitchen might take some getting used to. Love the color scheme on the White Stripes (RIP), but not sure about the kitchen. I'm sure I'm in the minority, as all of your work is outstanding and beautiful.
  • Don't give me that much credit, Steve. Most of it was all done before Xmas. I painted the poppy tile last week and we just installed it today. There are so many different personal styles that people have. I feel blessed to be able to get creative and work with all of them. It's about making THEIR dreams come to reality. It's like being able to play in everyone else's sandbox!!! LOL

Yes, I always love seeing people doing creative things, even if they are not my cup of tea.

I like the black color scheme in a kitchen, however I just really don't like whte cabinets in any kitchen.

The new kitchen totally rocks! The homeowners were obviously spending some money (I have priced those stoves!) so it is interesting that cabinet configuration is basically unchanged. Did they just reface them?

What a highly refined theme and a 1000% improvement for sure. Just the right amount of color, it's enjoyable to look at. There is something about black and white. Black paints and a white shirt look good even in a casual atmosphere; I just don't know when to pitch the white socks. Such a sweet job, Kass, I know they are happy. Thanks for the pics. CP

Looks like new subway tile to replace the old square tiles, refaced and new cabinet doors...new counter, sink, faucet, appliances, swapped out old style wall switches and outlets...probably a few more that I missed.

I wish I could look at a room & decide the whole theme. Nope, never happen. I think you were born with that talent and it shows. It is lovely.
  • This was a team effort with a design group and many other trades. We all worked so well together to come up with ideas that could make this project come to reality on time and within the budget. I just did my pieces of the puzzle. . . the walls and the hand painted tile on the back splash. When you are doing a project like this that involves a lot of different specialties, it is important that there is a leader/ project manager that understands everything that is needed. That way, it all gets done in the right order and runs smooth as silk.
  • Hi...like this. I see that this is a mass-produced mural...I do custom hand painted tile...all origianals. I was previously the only hand painted tile artist for John Weiland Homes. Would love to make contact with you and have you see what I do so we could do a project together! I am on this network....Linda Evanglyn Wallace, Artist

I love it sooo much better than the before! It is unique and cheery. I was looking for a red coffee maker to add some pop in my kitchen. I never would have even though of a red oven! I think the backsplash flowers are an excellent compliment to the whole scheme. I lean more traditional in my home decor but I absolutely LOVE this!
  • Thank you everyone. This was such a fun and creative project. This delightful client has the personality to match! The subway tiles and silver trim were first installed to make sure they lined up correctly. The large tile was then cut for an exact fit. The wall finish was applied as the background for a consistent look in the space. Then, the poppies were hand painted to insure the correct scale, placement and color match. Multiple layers of sealers were applied to make sure it would stand up to the elements over time. It was a labor of love.

Liked both the before and after, but absolutely love the after. Where did you get the red stove?
  • I will check with the designers.

I think it is cool and different. The only thing about white is that it seems to outdate very quickly. But it is nice.
  • Connie H Connie H on Jan 04, 2012
okay just saw the picture of the black cabinets and love it!!! Looks very awesomely nice.
  • Catherine S Catherine S on Jan 04, 2012
Actually, I'd be thrilled with your "before" kitchen, very traditional nice white cabinets, beautiful blue & white tiling. I understand you wanted something new & sleek. I do like the retro red stove - that's hot!
  • Pamela B Pamela B on Jan 05, 2012
    Love love love the after

@Jo G: I've actually looked at those stoves, but stopped looking as soon as I saw the price tag! They're called "Big Chill" and made by a company that makes a whole line of similar retro appliances: http://bigchill.com/site/stoves

Those are just soo cool though! They totally skipped over Florida! =

I love the red and black, my kitchen has red walls, and I have a strawberry theme. I love my kitchen, I love the red stove.

I love both the before and after.. thing is about black and white, or blue and white.. its easy to change the decor by switching out the accent color with accessories.. a few bucks bright fabric, accessory or two.. its fun to rethink it and improvise for an update..
