Ideally you would want to remove the old laminate top..real PITA, but with a heat gun, a putty knife and time, it can be done..if its down solid, you can put a new sheet over it, but I never thought it was a good idea, as you would need new wider side strips and it could have a worn low spot that would be exacerbated with the new top piece. And if it has a formed rolled edge, you will just have to remove the top and build another one. Good luck, no method is easy or simple..

Your best bet is to remove the countertops and replace them. Most of the painting kits made for countertops look okay, but are not the greatest when it comes to durability. It is actually easier to just start over. You can buy preformed countertops at your local home center fairly reasonably.

Maybe rough up the surface of the laminate with sandpaper and apply ceramic tiles? You can lay out the tile design before making it permanebt and you will probably find tiles to fit the overhang/sides. Good luck!

I have not found a product that will stay on countertops. The best way to improve the look is to replace the countertop.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Just as I thought, time to replace completely. Maybe I can do a whole kitchen makeover while I'm at it!

We painted our countertops and sealed them with Envirotex Lite. We love them!

If you need a quick facelift to buy time until you really know what you want to do, I have seen people cover them with ConTact paper

Why do anything, my husband works for a company that build custom furniture for million dollar homes, people pay to have those made. Design around them and make the other elements of the kitchen pop.

If you're going to use them as real butcher block, make sure that the wood/stain/sealant are food-safe.

You can paint them...If you do you will have to treat them as a laminate counter; no cutting or hot pots. Mine lasted until I renovated. The first one was with a water-based textured craft paint with a poly top, and I renovated 5+ years later, and I donated it because it was still in great shape.

The 2nd/3rd ones were spray painted with Krylon Fusion spray paint when it came out here in Canada--no primer or poly. I redid the kitchen about 15 years later. A couple of spots lost their shine, but other than that they held up, and I was not careful with them.

So I'm guessing that the paint kits made for counters, must be quite durable.

I used high gloss boat and a boat primer still going strong , looks like black glass. Pretty durable !
