I've seen several projects where they used contact paper. Also, scrubbable wallpaper might be a solution depending on how well it will adhere.

I'll try again-my problem is that the edges are rounded and I couldn't quite get the paper to fit around the curves. Thanks

Wallpaper cut about and inch or two smaller than the cabinet doors with thin strip of wood around it would look nice. Contact paper is hard to get all of the bubbles and creases out to look really nice. Material cut, glued on and sealed with polyurethane and surrounded with wood (Home Depot carries beautiful wood trim strips).

Painting your Formica cabinets is a cheap way to give a room a whole new look. But be warned, it's tricky to paint over Formica. Formica has such a slippery surface that paint has a hard time sticking to it. ... Remove all the hardware from the cabinets. How to Paint Formica Cabinets | HowStuffWorks

You could put an epoxy on the countertop. Here is a website that has some good videos on how to use their products.

I wish I could but it cannot be anything permanent. Contact paper seems to be the way to go.

Is there a reason you can't paint? There are instructions online about how to handle the tricky nature of painting formica.

This may not be a suggestion that appeals to you, but have you considered removing the doors (at least the upper cabinet ones) and storing them until you have to reattach? Open shelving can be a very attractive solution.

I am considering removing the doors. Or using fabric and starch. My husband is the reason I'm not painting. We did paint the kitchen white (they were real wood) and it is magnificent!
