use carpet remnants
Ask your landlord if you can do anything permanent. You may not be able to do so. If you can, clean it well and paint it. If not, cover it with a large scatter rug that you are able to clean. This is not your place so you don't want to invest a lot of money.
You can make a canvas (big box store drop cloth) rug. I had great fun making one. You can make it as decorative or as simple as you want.

Find one of those giant discount carpet stores in your area, they usually have smaller rolls of linoleum cheap, just roll it out and tack it down with finishing nails.
You can also use parquet flooring- they can link together like puzzle pieces and are removable when you leave. Its a bigger investment than a rug/carpet but is another alternative- keep us posted, good luck :)
