Declutter -- put as many small appliances as you can in a cupboard or pantry, if you don't use it every day, put it away! And monochromatic color scheme helps if you like that look -- it keeps everything 'blended' together, nothing stands out -- if you have windows use sheer curtains or none at all - as much natural light as possible

First, declutter it. Get rid of everything you don't need or use. Then, organize the space as much as possible to make it nice and neat. Less clutter will open up the space and make it appear larger as well. If possible, paint the room with light, bright colors. Use a satin or semi-gloss paint that will reflect light and make the room appear bigger.

Keep as many things off of the countertops as you can; keep your color scheme limited to 1 or 2 major colors with 1 accent color; eliminate clutter; and buy streamlined furniture. Note: for additional "visual space", buy taller tables, chairs and barstools and place some of your accessories higher on the walls.
