I want to repaint the kitchen and maybe install a frugal backsplash. My walls are that textured drywall and I'm not sure a peel & stick tile will work.
Try the new peelable Contac paper. It is a bit thinner than the regular Contac paper but it comes in a few pretty patterns. You might also find some partial rolls of wallpaper at a local Restore for little money that could work for you.

I bought a large poster with acrylic/heavy plastic cover at an estate sale for $2.00.
I had to trim it just a bit to fit the back-splash area behind my stove. I I fastened it to
the wall with 2 small nails near the top. The covering protects image from grease which can easily be wiped clean. The image could easily be changed to ?? photos, holiday or seasonal scenes. It is 'rent friendly' and inexpensive even if you have to pay full price for the poster, and best of all it is 'one of a kind'.
