Would like to give them an updated look. Unsure if I should try to stain them or paint them.

Unless you are planning on painting your cupboards also, I would stick with trying to match the stain that you presently have on your cupboards.

You could do a shaker style with 1/4" x 2" trim. https://www.google.com/search?q=shaker+style+cabinets+kitchen&client=opera&hs=vn2&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjX2beR5cHWAhVY_mMKHVoTBjMQ7AkIXw&biw=1366&bih=629 I would paint them for sure, sand, prime, paint.

I would get new hidden hinges and door hardware to update them also.

And I would redo that faux brick backsplash for some kind of tile or use tin ceiling tiles for a metallic look.

Agreed, the shaker trim would update them tastfully and its the least "home done" looking, but you would have to get new hinges. Shaker trim as Sharon suggested would cover the old hardware holes so you can place new knobs in a more usable place. The drawer hardware could be cup handles to cover the old holes. It would be a nice add on to the bulk head above the shorter cabinet above the stove. Drawer trim would be totally unnecessary with this style too (less work). Any light color paint would be nice , OR white or cream uppers with gray lowers is a beautiful alternative to an all white kitchen. Opens up the area without looking too sterile. Lots of luck...

If you're going to add trim to change the door style and/or add molding, I would definitely paint them. It would be easier to get a uniform color with paint than to try to match the new stain to the old wood.

I would definitely paint them a light color, maybe even a cream or a white. That would give some brightness to the kitchen. It looks like there is a lot of dark going on in there.

I used Ever True picture frame moulding (from Lowes) to update my room doors. It comes in smaller sizes than what I used and could easily be used on cabinets. link to my post attached.

Painting gives you many more options, and is a lot easier than staining. There's beautiful trims at home improvement stores. Also nice door hardware will give them a beautiful look.
