Ideas for what to do about updating these hinges

Lori
by Lori
I will be painting the kitchen cupboards a soft white and need to re use the hinges, as in HAVE TO, reuse the hinges. I'd like to ask for ideas on what to do with them after I clean them really well. I have stainless handles which I'm keeping, stainless appliances and really don't want to emphasize those hinges too much but am willing to consider anything.
See how they just pop out at you? I know when the cupboards are white it won't be so obvious but...........

You can take them off and paint them the same color of your cabinets.

Use spray paint on them. To match the cabinets, like Janet says, or use silver so they match your other metals.

I'm willing to bet, once the cabinets are painted, you will barely notice the hinges. I would not paint them unless absolutely necessary because even the smallest accumulation of paint may interfere with the hinges working properly. Wait until your cabinets are painted before you fret. I think your concern will be all for naught. :)

I agree with readers. You'll barely notice them. Wait until you have it painted to see what you think.

I agree with waiting until your cabinets are painted to see if you still want to change them, but I will tell you that I had the same hinges in a previous house and I painted them with a brushed nickle spray paint. They looked great, and worked perfectly. Just do 2 light coats, 24 hours apart.

Thanks Robin. Brushed nickle, never thought of that, all I could think of was silver. I think I will do as everyone suggests, hope they don't show as much when cupboards are painted because doing anything else will just draw the eye to them again, which I am trying to get away from. :)

Taking advice, wait and see how they look with the cupboards painted. That was the main consenses.

Speaking from experience: I painted my cabinets and was intending on reusing the hinges, as well. It was SO frustrating - nearly half the screws stripped as I removed them!!! I went to look for the same size small screws to replace them and all I could find at home depot were a few little bags of 4 screws each. I ended up having to buy new hinges, anyway!! Just telling you this so maybe you might save a headache or two - l don't know how many years your hinges have remained undisturbed in your kitchen, but if they are a bit elderly and may have accumulated some rust, you may want to google a good tutorial for tricks on removing old screws without stripping them.

Light spray paint (nickel sounds perfect). I've sprayed all of my old hardware in a flat black on white furniture--looks wonderful and doesn't come off easily.

Hi @Lori I saw a post yesterday where someone used Rub and Buff on their hinges and ceiling fans, and it looked good. I can't find it, but here is the search page link...I've never used the product: http://www.hometalk.com/search/posts?filter=rub%20and%20buffI have redone kichen and bathroom cabinets a few times with visible hinges...regular paint gums them up...spray paint can crack, so if you go that route, spray very lightly, and open them up in different positions with each light coat.I have fought with putting them back as @Kelly MacGregor , so I tend to leave them on. I agree with waiting as many have said. My last reno, I went over them with my dark gel stain and they are still great...

Thanks Kelly, I have considered that this may not go as smoothly as planned both with the hinges and the husband. :)

@Lori I loved how your brought your "Assistant" into the conversation, Lori. I, too, ended up buying new hinges for my Mobil Home Kitchen re-do. I wish I had better news to offer.

Thank you, B Enneagram, for referencing my post. Here is the link: http://www.hometalk.com/diy/paint/furniture/the-power-of-rub-n-buff-11149305. Rub n buff works on metal, paint, plastic anything. I plan on using it on our kitchen hinges also. To help it have staying power, I will tape my cabinets so I don't get RnB on them, use zinsser cover stain brush on (it's oil based). I will Rub n Buff each hinge and then use Water based Varathane to seal as that is what the makers of RnB recommend since sealers can change the color of not only metallic paints, but RnB as well. RnB would be fine on clean hinges without cover stain primer - I just want to give it extra grip. Hope this helps!

I have the exact same hinges in my home. I removed and cleaned them with hot water and Dawn dish soap. Once dry I painted them with Rustoleum spray paint. That was 3 years ago and they still look brand new. You can choose any color of your choice! Good luck. p.s. don't forget to paint the screws to match.

Add a little white vinegar to your cleaning solution and heat to a boil in a suucepan. Use a toothbrush to get in all the cracks and crannies. Dry thoroughly.

I just painted all my cupboards and could not afford new hinges since there are so many. I cleaned them with hot water and a scrub brush then spray painted them with Hammered Metallic in a dark color. They look brand new and saved me a lot of money. For a few dollars you can change them up.
