  • You can. How handy are you? Have any tools? What do you want to replace them with?

Yes. You can do it if you are not talking about stone. Formica is an easy fix and it doesn't cost much. Measure your old counter tops so that you have good dimensions to use for ordering the new. If your countertop takes a turn it is usually cut and seamed on the diagonal and cinched together underneath. Have a good set of dimensions and a birdseye view drawing of what you want when you order your new countertop. The cut out for the sink and/or cooktop is very important. This is the perfect time to buy a new sink and faucets. Pay attention to how the old countertop comes out, because that's how the new one goes in. If you or your son are not comfortable with the plumbing that is involved get some prices and consider having the work done by a local handyman.

There are several types of counter tops that you can do yourself, laminate/formica, butcher block, or tile or concrete... Any solid surface counter top should be professionally measured and installed... because if there are errors or breakage.... the fault and responsibility is theirs.
