Using a paint thats more washable works for me and I have decorative decor below the cabinets that can be changed.

For a single accent—One newer ideas of interest to me is firebacks is to use that near the stove cooktop. Depending upon your lighting and decor sometimes a pop of black it’s really attractive in a room.

Consider looking at Houzz and Pinterest for ideas.

Hi Deux, There are kits you can buy that you could put up your self. It's a matter of peeling the back off and stick it on the wall. Home Depot or Lowe's carries these kits. Stop by take a look.

We put up new backsplash when we prepared our home for sale. We did not want to spend a lot of money so we looked at our home improvement store for ideas. The least expensive and easiest one that worked beautifully was sheets of backsplash that are peel and stick. We made sure the wall was clean and cut the sheet to the size we needed. It looked 3 dimensional and was metallic so cleaned/wiped off easily. It LOOKED like tiles but was all one piece. They come in faux copper, tin, and faux brass. This means one will fit just about any decoration scheme.

I don't know what you currently have, but if it can be painted I'd suggest a good quality, washable paint, Maybe make a design with more than one color, using painters tape.
