It really depends on how much you are willing to spend. Are you willing to open walls, are you just looking for more storage?? You might have to hire a contractor depending on how much you want to do.
More details and pictures of your existing kitchen would be so helpful. I'm in the process, myself of trying to gain more kitchen storage space, as well as, some counter space. So I've accumulated a book full of ideas. Haha ! Also, what is the size of the kitchen now ? And how much more space are you looking to find ?
A designer may be worth the price. Ours suggested a new layout and different types of cabinets and features we never would have thought of on our own. Big box stores often have kitchen designers who will give you a virtual printout with no charge Along with suggestions for counters, pulls, cabinets and flooring that go together.
Short of taking out walls or cabinets there is not a lot you can do. Total enlargement would involve the design of floor plan and possibly moving electrical and plumbing, which usually requires certified persons for both. Decide how you want your kitchen to function and the amount of space you have. I'm assuming you have been working/prepping in your current kitchen and that would be a good starting place to decide what you want to make different. When you can't go out, go up. Shelving adds storage and can be visually attractive.
