Need a color scheme for my kitchen

I have a large kitchen with black granite countertops with gold flecks. The cabinets are solid pecan, 30 years old without one scratch. The color of the cabinets are just a medium brown, not orangey. The floor is rust color 18 by 18 porcelain tiles. The kitchen is 21x13. Even with lots of windows, it seems dark and outdated. Should I paint the cabinets? I can’t afford new granite or floor. Long for any ideas to modernize. Backsplash?, wall color, anything. I’m at a loss.

    A picture would help.

White cabinets with updated hardware and shiny black subway tiles as your backsplash -- or with gold flecks to match your countertop — would look updated! The backsplash could even have a row of white tile through the middle of the black tile. This would brighten the room and be a classy look!

I agree with Janet. We had dark walnut cabinets in our north facing kitchen. The room always seemed dark. I finally decided to paint the white. Wow! What a difference. The whole kitchen looks brighter and almost like new. Wishing you the best.

ibwould lighten your backsplash with white or bone subway tiles, add some lighter curtains. Try some new hardware on your cabinets.

I would add better lighting.... under cabinet like a LED strip, some LED potlights in ceiling or some pendant lights over task areas.
A lighter backsplash like white subway tile with dark grey grout would tie the counters into the lighter tile.

I would go with a cloud white.
