Need help selecting hardware finish options

We are in the stages of planning a kitchen redesign. Presently all our hardware is mismatched (thank you, previous homeowners). I plan to unify the finishes. I think it makes sense to use the same finish -- for instance, bronze or stainless -- on everything: faucet, door knobs, drawer pulls.
But, where do lighting fixtures fit into this rule? Specifically pendants and island lights. Should they match the finish on everything "down below?"
We are aiming for a french country farmhouse style. So, I like the idea of bronze faucets and drawer pulls because bronze will add depth and warmth. But I was thinking that light fixtures with a stainless steel finish will reflect more light in a small kitchen than dark bronze hardware would. I just don't know if that sounds like another mismatch waiting to happen.

I am just finishing a kitchen remodel and have looked at 1000s of pictures of hardware. Just like any other room, too much of one thing gets very one dimensional. For a French farmhouse look, I think you would want a more "collected over time" look. Aged bronze is good choice, but then maybe a few copper accents or aged brass for a nice change of pace. I have used metallic spray paint with success on things that don't get touched to often like a light fixture or metal curtain rod. I wouldn't recommend for handles or pulls unless it was for a short time until you can afford what you really want. Hope that helps.

@Lynne Boyd Almstrom Good food for thought! I didn't think about that, you are right -- I certainly don't want it to look predictable, out-of-the-box or too matchy-matchy. Seems there may be some room for creativity after all.

I recently did a kitchen remodel as well. I did though however used the same bush nickel concept throughout. I Do not feel it is matchy, matchy at all .It is truly a very personal decision. Best of luck on your endeavor.

Go with the bronze, not stainless! Even if your faucet were stainless, it wouldn't matter. Look through Google images of country French and similar kitchens and you'll see :)

I like an eclectic look so it appears things have been shopped for over time. I love oil rubbed bronze and copper patina as well as glass pulls and knobs. If you're going for a French country style I would think elements that were warmer would work vs shiny. To me shiny or even brushed stainless or nickel finishes seem more modern or industrial

Kristine, if you can't find certain items in the finishes you want there's always paint. Yes, you can even paint faucets! http://decoratingwcents.blogspot.com/2012/09/update-on-my-painted-bathroom-faucets.html http://diyshowoff.com/2013/08/13/painted-faucets/
