Painting kitchen counter tops

We live in an old farmhouse. There is an ugly orange counter and a green sink in the kitchen. We don't have a lot of money so I was wondering if it is possible to just paint the counter and what kind of paint would I need??

You can paint the countertop and if the sink is enamel paint it too. Not sure what kind of paint to use , but I always ask at home improvement stores, and they have never done me wrong!
  • You can paint the countertop but the stuff is toxic and needs to be done when you can open the windows and breathe. You can paint with any paint as long as you can buy a great primer made for laminated/glossy surfaces and then paint any color you want. then invest in a great top coat poly made for countertops where food will be prepared. I would not paint the sink! I would find pretty fabric with the green similar to the sink and use that for curtains. Painting a sink will not last and the stuff is toxic too. Then on Monday or Tuesdays you go to your local home stores and browse the clearance aisles looking for a new sink because people return them and the store like Lowe's and Home Depot mark them down! good luck!

Rust-o-leum makes a counter top kit and one for sinks too. Find them at Lowes or Home Depot and I believe they are reasonable priced. Good luck!

Great answers here. I always use a primer that is called a Bonder/Primer. If it doesn't say Bonder Primer I would stay clear. Make sure you sand and clean your surfaces first. I sand with an eighty grit paper. This brings up what is called a tooth. Or a rougher surface which your paint will be able to adhere too. I have used my own custom chalk paint with great success. I sand in between each of several coats of paint. Let this cure a few days and then use a marine grade varnish. I do at least four coats. Drying and sanding in between each coat. This will dry to a very hard surface. Good luck SK on Elderberry

i used a product called Giani granite which is basically a primer followed by sponging on different color acrylic paints in layers to get the granite effect and polyeurethane. It came out amazing. The poly sealer is sensitive to water so you can wash it but you cant keep puddles sitting on it for long periods of time. After using their product I am confident that you can use your own primer (get a good one) craft paint and poly. But as a first timer, it was nice having the kit together with the instructional video. Here's the link- https://gianigranite.com/

I just finished painting ours on Thursday, I love it. Rustoleum has a quart of counter top paint that is tintable in 8 colors. The can was less then $14. at Home Depot. Then I sponged 4 different colors of craft paint $2.00 total before sealing it with 4 coats of water based poly acrylic. $13.00 Of course you can not cut on it, but you shouldn't cut on any Formica counter top.
