Pantry update idea?

by Janet Sharik

This is our “first” home and we were so elated to have a large pantry in the kitchen ! Over the years I began to realize what an eyesore it is. I am thinking of widening the doorway and change it to French door. Any affordable idea for a French door? Pinterest was helpful, but so expensive!

Hi Janet. You can look for close out deals at your local home improvement store. One I go to always has things on clearance. Either from special orders coming in wrong or display models. I just purchase a nice door for $89. This door would've been over $400. I also have humane for humanity stores where you can donate home improvement items and purchase them cheap. Good Luck!

Why would you want a glass door? Disguise what you have with paint.

If you need to widen the door then fine, but remember it’s a great deal more work and you’ll loose wall space both outside and inside the closet. Have you considered using a decorative screen door? Or if you want it completely sealed how about an exterior door with a window, maybe even a leased glass or stained glass window. Check your local resale stores and close out building supply stores as well as Craig’s list and other resale sites

They make a door that is frosted glass, and it is etched with the word: pantry (vegetables and grains are art surrounding Pantry.

If your laundry is near, the same door can be etched with Laundry, and it shows a basket of clothes and a washboard art. Check with your local lumberyard.

The new frosted doors with glass that we wanted were expensive, and so were the old ones at salvage businesses. We found a beautiful heavy old door with glass for free on craigslist. There are all sorts of ways to frost and letter it, from custom window decals to paint. We're still researching the best way to do that.

We bought and old vintage door from Craigslist for $20 and painted it with chalkboard paint. It added character to our pantry. Inside is the shopping list. Outside is for notes and menus.

We had a bi-fold door on our pantry for years. You could barely get it opened far enough to really see what was inside. We finally had the door removed and the opening widened a few inches so it would take a 30 inch regular door. That was a huge improvement. But I took it a step further and painted it a deep red color to coordinate with the color scheme of the family room and kitchen and added a "pantry" decal that I found on the internet. We love our new door to the pantry and it added so much to the kitchen. Paint is a lot cheaper than adding a glass door, adds character and still hides the inside of the pantry.

just keep the door that you have and just spruce it up a bit. To replace it will cost so much more. You can stain or paint the existing door, add chalk board paint so you can write a grocery list for items that you need, add molding to the door or just glue empty picture frames to give the look of molding for less costs to give it more interest etc.

If you want to update at a low cost, then paint is your answer. Paint it a color that goes with your kitchen and use wood trim to give it character. Maybe even a narrow shelf in which you can attach a chalk or message board.

Create a faux french door using the door you have add thin moulding trim to create the design you want( three horizontal rectangular boxes or 12-15 smaller squares). Then add frosted or textured contact paper to the “boxes” to give the illusion of windows. If you want real windows cut out the middle of your door then add plexiglass & frame it with moulding you can then add the frosted pantry decal. If your door is hollow check Habitat for a solid door.
