Pat....Remove doors marking so you know where to return each. Clean and sand the cabinets. Begin with primer (can purchase paint that has primer in it) then paint. I think they look really good....I did mine! Good luck!
How to refinish? With paint or stain?
Pat....It is just up to you about stain or paint. After sanding and cleaning you will apply you stain and then polyurethane otherwise if paint do the primer/paint.

Although some folks have been satisfied with the results of painting their oak cabinets, there are several factors that have an effect on whether the results may look 'homemade' or not:
-the condition of the cabinets to start with
-the amount of proper preparation undertaken
-the quality of materials (brushes, paint) used
-if adequate amount of drying time was allowed in between coats
