Replacing kitchen floor tile with new kitchen floor tile?
I need to retile my kitchen floor. I can easily take up the existing tile but what will be needed to replace it with new tile that won't break easily. How long will it take?

I think this is an 'it depends...' question, Deb. The important thing to remember when laying tile is to have the surface smooth and level so the tiles won't crack. As far as how long it will take, that depends on the size of the room. I did see 4 hours for 100 square feet, from set-up to clean-up quoted. Good luck with your project!
Hi Deb. There are so many variables here. Subfloor; can/did you get all previous mortar up? Is it level?
As far as replacement tile, that you will need to do your research on!!! You know the conditions that need to be met for your home, so that decision is a personal one.
How long will it take; again, it depends on how big /small space is, professional/you are doing the work. It truly depends on your choices here.
Generally speaking, a 10X10 room would take me 2 days. IF, IF, IF, few multi cuts, large size tiles, subfloor is ready. If the tiles are 2x3, I would venture a week just to get them laid. Factor in kitchen would be off limits that long too.
Variables!!
To keep tiles from breaking you need to make sure your subfloor is beefy enough for tile. A lot of builders just plan on vinyl and only use 3/4 plywood with 1/4 luan. You need at least 1 inch plywood plus 1/2 inch tile uderlayment that is mortered down to the plywood. The uderlayment will be concrete board or fiberglass backer board. Now you can lay ant tile you want.
