The best & least Expensive way to cover 50s laminate countertop

The current laminate counter top is faded, Scratched and stained and has a 1” x 3” splash guard & 2” overhang. The sink set in the top is yellow for now. I like the style of the counter & cabinet just not the old looking laminate. Suggestions?

Paint it with a good primer first, then a good paint(not white or off white as it will yellow), and apply several coats of polyurethane satin finish over the top. Rustoleum makes a countertop paint, but its rather expensive and appears to just be oil based paint. I have seen many countertips painted with latex, acrylics, etc. and as long as they have several coats of poly on top, they seem to hold up very well.

oh, when I painted my bathroom counter, I removed the the 3” backsplash and put up some stick on glass tile. Here are before and after pics.
