Pick a color from your counter top that you like, and try that color on a piece of foam core board, set it arround the room to see how the different lighting conditions affect it.
Don't be scared. Change the color of lower cabinets or floor. You could just listen door color on lower cabinets. You could try adding colored hardware first you can get real fun colorful nobs and pulls that might help without painting.
Are your walls yellow? It is hard to tell with the pic. If painting the cabinets are more than you want to take on now. You could possibly just paint the lower cabinets to break up the flow of wood tone/color from the floor and base cabinets. Consider painting the wall color to add some focal point to break up the wood tone. A nice light green, like green trellis color (by Behr) or a gray-green would look nice. My kitchen has a similar area that is like yours, sink across from stove and I added an area rug that spans the whole area instead of a small area rug in front of the sink. It is a great visual to breaking up some of the wood tones on the floor. You can get a nice piece of bound carpet for fairly inexpensive costs. Also some wall paint colors in a kitchen with lots of wood. That way in 5-6 years it is not expensive to replace.

Hello! With your dark dining table in the foreground of your photoand dark flecks in your countertop, your cabinets would look great painted a deep espresso color! It would give your kitchen an updated look and make your gold wall color pop! Good luck!
You could stain the lower cabinets with gel stain to make them darker or whitewash them. Neither is as time intensive as painting all of them.
I would paint the walls a darker color. Then pick up that color as an accent color - area rug, curtains, placemats / runner , hand towels, flower arrangement for the table, candle sticks, a cookie jar or such. The problem it appears to me is not the floor or cabinets, it is the lack of color elsewhere. By just changing the walls and accessories a you can easily change out when you get tired of the color you choose. The dark red in your area rug may be a possibility. Don't shy away form color that is what I think is missing here. But changing the cabinets is a really big commitment and a lot more work.
I had the same problem when we moved into our new home. I ended up painting my base units darkish grey and the wall units a paler grey. My worktops are lime green which i can't change, so i do have a splash of colour there. What do you think about stencilling your floor? I have read many articles here from Hometalk and it makes an amazing transformation. All the best.
I would paint the walls and then paint wood trim around doors with a matching color.. something to go with the counter.. then coordinate with other decor
I love oak cabinets and would paint the walls instead. In the old house, we had oak cabinets. At different points in time, I had the walls painted apple green and wedgwood blue and loved both.
Paint your moldings, window sills & behind the refrigerator white. Change the rug in front of the sink to something lighter with yellow/white in it, maybe a little larger, as well.
