Hi Cheryl, you can update the island with a new counter top or paint the base in a color you love that fits into the color scheme of your home. You could use a contrasting color to draw attention to it if that's something you'd like. Many of the newer kitchens have cabinets that are not all the same & don't match. It adds a bit of interest to the kitchen. I'm planning to paint mine black to make it more "grounded" as I have lighter counters.
Hey Cheryl, you can also redo the counter top as well, there are several kits out there for faux granite and other looks, then paint the base to coordinate

Besides updating the top, another great transformation you can give your island is to paint its cabinets. Here is how I painted my bathroom cabinets without sanding it. You could use the same technique. Good luck! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ko5CsLqNIZQ
Give it a fresh coat of paint, add wood details like shiplap or another design, transform the counters into concrete countertops, switch out the handles, etc. You'll have to let us know what you end up doing!
Hi Cheryl! You can update your island by painting it with Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint! :)
It is super easy to paint with Dixie Belle:
Step one: Clean with White Lightning
Step two: Apply two coats of Slick Stick if the surface is shiny or slick
Step three: Paint one to two coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint
Step three: Use Gator Hide for a water-repellent finish
Here is a great blog post that shows step by step how to redo counter tops, which is a similar process https://www.leahnoelldesignco.com/counter-top-update/

Got kids or grands? Chalkboard paint for the base. I am toping my island with solid wood top from Ikea and repainting the base a darker color to ground it. It is a little bit longer then before so I am adding an old file cabinet as a dog feeding station, bottom pullout bowls & dog food & treats in upper drawer.
