Updating cabinets without paint?

You can always try matching the stain. Worst case? you paint them.

Here is a concept. Purchase flat wood trim and stain it to match your existing cabinets. Minwax has stain in all wood tones. You can even mix stains to get your color. Use a sample board to match the stain.

You don't mention what kind of wood the cabinets are. Some woods take stain better than others. It may be possible to match the stain. You could take down a door and take it in to your local home improvement store to get as close as you possibly can. Possible with some subtle differences between brands you may find a match. If you can get close you can then find trim that might work. I like the idea of using molding rather than trying to make the cabinets look Shaker style-Betsy gave you a good example. You could always stain that molding a different color that coordinates. Stain comes in so many colors you might find a two tone effect pleasing to the eye.

You can always take a door to a stand alone paint store with a scrap of your new door trim. They can usually match your existing stain. Good luck.
