What's best to put on wall behind stove??

A sheet of bead board that is 4 x 8' is less than $20. Add trim in wood or plastic edging strips and paint what ever color you want. They come in white but if you want to be able to wash them down from grease and food splashes, 2 coats of washable paint. Attach to the wall with Loctite construction glue in a caulking tube.

Bead board is an inexpensive option but those sticky backsplash tiles would absolutely work and they come in SO MANY fun and interesting patterns styles and colors!

you could put up a sheet of clear vinyl; a sheet of metal or use peel and stick wallpaper tiles that go on easy and come off easy

Range or wood stove?

We put a piece of stainless steel and I love it because it is so scrubbable. My MIL has a piece of formica or similar and it has worked very well also. My sister used metal flashing which is similar to stainless steel but cheaper, but you have to put a few strips of it.

Not sure about contact paper because it seems that it would not hold up when scrubbed due to grease & such. But you could do it easily & cheap, so just peel & replace when it gets bad spots.

Yes, contact paper will love the food splatters and will be unscrubbable. Oil spatters on plastic sink in.

You could put a piece of glass on that wall, with mirror clips and even paint something on the wall, underneath it- a phrase or an object, like flowers.

We didn't put anything behind our stove since it sits out from the wall and the metal sheeting protects the wall from the heat. We have used that wood stove for over 15 years not a problem but be safe.

A stainless steel panel would work great. Buy the size you want and screw it to the wall studs. Grease and cooking splatters can be easily cleaned off with a hot soapy cloth.

Sticky paper, aka contact paper, has the off chance of catching on fire, so that's not a good option. There are peel and stick tiles available at home improvement stores or online or you could use a thin sheet of metal and attach it to the wall.

Using sticky paper would definitely do the work, however it may be quite dangerous. Another option is to a steel panel.
