What's the easiest/most cost effective way to update kitchen cabinets?

I've got some hideous, outdated wood cabinets throughout my home that desperatemy need a makeover. My kitchen is my main focus, but unfortunately I'm not crafty AT ALL. Can someone teach me how to do some updates? Should I go buy chalk paint, do I absolutely have to sand everything first, do I need some special paint or certain tools, how do I seal the paint so I don't scratch it after all my hard work? Please help me....my kitchen is SO ugly & I'm afraid I'll undoubtedly make it worse with no direction. 😬

Scrub scrub srub. Use TSP. Then use liquid sander. Use a good quality paint and paint carefully. Let dry thoroughly and do another coat. Did my kitchen almost 3 years ago and it still looks like it was done yesterday. Of course it is just me and no kids banging into them.

I have wallpapered all of the higher panels with ivy vines on a white background. I have had no trouble with having the paper come off. Just wet the paper as you would otherwise. some of my friends have done the same with different designs.

How about using chalkpaint for a makeover? It looks great and is really easy to use!
