In the story of my black floor, there were three elements which made my job somewhat less common than most others.

The linked article contains:

After some tests, and well, after touching base with some old-timers, I could make a reasonable guess that my floor’s current finish was Fabulon. It’s characteristics, as I discovered, were very similar to lacquer, but in the end – it is a very unique finish that is hard to remove.

Info about removing Fabulon.

The 2” oak in my house was only ½” thick.

Selecting a sander for this job.

It pained me almost to stain such a gorgeous floor.

Also as mentioned above, I would be working in a space that included a number of immovable objects. A kitchen – where cabinets and appliances remained in place. Refinishing a kitchen wood floor can be more challenging that re-finishing wood floors in other parts of the house.

Add this, for staining – I went off script (against conventional wisdom) and selected a Wiping Stain for my wood floor.

All and all a fun project which I ultimately think helped sell our house. Come see all the details. Cheers. ~jb

I don't know if i would have gone black on beautiful hardwood. I love the look of wood. That is what sells here in the Midwest. Fabulon is just a heavy duty polyurethane. Not available in many states due to high VOC content. That is what gives it strength. Very hard to remove.

I can attest to the challenge of Fabulon. I will admit it did tug at my heart to have to stain this gorgeous floor. As noted in the linked article, with a houseful of hardwood, this was the right decision to tie this Kitchen space together. Thanks for you comment William. ~jb
