Wall Paper Your Ceiling

Popcorn ceilings are extremely unpopular and not easy to maintain. Dust, cobwebs etc often cling to them. When you try to clean them you end up with a big mess. When we renovated our kitchen, we removed a wall, leaving a gap where wall met ceiling. The patched area was bare and so we needed to scrape the popcorn.
Once the ceiling was patched where the existing wall was, we had popcorn every where. When we tried to remove the popcorn, we realized it had been painted over several times through the years, it did not go without a fight.
We had to scrape and use a palm sander, but there was a lot of damage. We were left with how to "fix" the ceiling. We priced tin ceiling tiles, bead board paneling, etc and then decided to use wallpaper that looked like ceiling tin. We did not soak the paper in water. Even though it was pre-pasted, we brushed on the wall a wall paper paste and hung the wall paper up dry. In between the wall paper we made simple faux beams using two by fours and molding for trim.
The beams added a little bit of interest and broke up the pattern just enough to make it easy to hang four foot strips of wall paper and hide the seams. I would not want to hang the wall paper the other way..it would be nearly impossible and there'd be seams that would not be easily hidden. A good fix for an ugly ceiling.

I just finished wallpapering a small 12x12 kitchen ceiling with small square effect. To avoid the seams I used white printable caulk then painted the ceiling. I must say, gorgeous.

For this projec, do the popcorn ceiling have to be sanded down before applying the wall paper?
