How can I organize my laundry closet?

Here is what my laundry closet looks like. I don’t like the way it looks and want to make it more organized and neat. Any suggestions??
Also, I wear a lot of clothing that must be hung to dry instead of places in the dryer. How can I put in something to make a place for hanging clothes to dry in my laundry closet??
And any suggestions for taking away a bad smell that comes from the washer after not being used for a bit? I use it weekly and there’s a strange/damp odor that always happens after use.

I would fill that shelf with baskets or fabric boxes which you can buy for about $4 each. If you line both shelves with these and fill them with all the "stuff" you have on the shelf, you will have a cohesive and organized look!

First of all, I would take everything off the shelves and sort the stuff into piles according categories you select. Get rid of anything you don't want or need. Donate, recycle, or give those items to a friend. Also, put stuff you don't need as much on the top shelves. If you don't have the money to buy organizing bins, use cardboard boxes and cover them with contact paper or wrapping paper to make them look pretty. I also do not use my washer that often. I leave my lid open when not in use. Also I only use white vinegar for my last rinse and if going to use dryer sheets, only use a half of one. Mostly I use my wool balls & don't have to dry as long & no static.
Does your washer connect directly to your drain and does it have a clamp on it. It it does and there is no trap on your drain you may be getting sewer gas up that pipe. There should be a trap on it but some times it gets missed.
I wish I had all the space and the lovely shelving you have in your laundry. You could use the basket idea already mentioned and take the smell out of the washing machine by adding some neat Borax with each wash.
