Without seeing the room this is a little difficult, but I have a few ideas. If you have room for a bench it's nice to build the underneath out in cubicles. This can be used for children's shoes and sports equipment. You could also get the fabric/wicker storage cubes and store seasonal items and laundry iteams under here. It is also nice to have a broom closet and coat closet. All of this can be done in whatever decor you would like. Pinterest has many ideas, look under Farmhous.
Add some bead board wainscoting to the lower portion of the wall. Cap it with a shelf and some hooks. Paint the upper portion of the wall and add some framed photos or prints.
