Brick and Brass Fireplace Makeover

For less than $30 and a couple hours you can update that 1970's brick and brass fireplace.

This makeover is for a friend. Her fireplace is on a wall surrounded by brick-face and brass.

After struggling to get the fire place surround off, I decided to paint it in place. I used Rustoleum for high heat in black. Tape off areas you don't want affected, like the glass and surrounding brick. 3 light coats did the trick.

Next, I used a putty knife to layer on shades of white chalk paint.

I used a putty knife and layered on spackle and several shades of white chalk paint. I purchased these from my local craft store. Just trowel it on like you're filling a hole.

I diluted the brightest white chalk paint with water; 1 part paint to 3 parts water. Using an inexpensive chip brush, I worked the paint into the brick and mortar. Use a rag to work it in, as desired.

Notice the fireplace glass and surround is protected here. The first coat dried very quickly. I used another chalk paint in a gray/beige color also diluted in the 1:3 ratio. Apply randomly to bricks and dab to insure no running.

This is the first step in the makeover I am working on for my friend.

***UPDATE: I ordered a mantle from Home Depot, stained it and gave it two coats of poly. A little zhushing and ta-da!

I did similar job on my fireplace. Lighter brick so I use an off white latex paint. I just wiped it off each brick as I went to make it look like the brick was originally white. (Not like painted brick) I was shocked at how fast it went and how well it turned out. LOVE it!
