I love giving my home special touches here and there that suit my personality. After living in my home for a little more than 5 years the rock on my fire place started to get to me and I really needed a change in our main living room. The thought process started and I was intrigued to take on the challenge of painting my fireplace stone a beautiful soft gray to give it a pop of some much needed character. This project was much easier than I anticipated and took a total of 2 hours from start to finish.
Supplies Used:
Americana Decor Chalky Finish paint in Primitive (See the entire color line here)
Paint Brush
Damp Rag
Vacuum
Clear Coat Varnish
Tutorial:
Before I could start any actual painting I had to clean off the stones as best as possible. I started off by vacuuming the stones, grout, fireplace area and more than followed by going over with a damp warm cloth and scrub the stones one by one. The stones didn’t appear dirty to the naked eye but once I took that damp cloth to the stones it was filthy. After you clean the stones allow to air dry for about 30 minutes before you start any painting. I removed my mantle from the fireplace and set aside so I could paint all the stones that were exposed. I opened up my jar of Americana Decor Chalky Finish paint in Primitive (which is a gorgeous light grey color) and using a flat paint brush started painting from the middle to the top down to the bottom. The last stones I painted were the steps since I was using them for extra height. I didn’t paint the inside of the fireplace as the paint I used is flammable and not meant for the inside of fire places. I painted all the stones and let dry overnight, and then the next morning I decided to paint all the grout to make the overall look blend together. While painting the grout I dabbed the paint into the grout allowing some of the actual grout to peek through for character. This project took a total of 2 hours of painting and drying over night and it turned out gorgeous! I was never a fan of the brown tone stones and now I’m loving the light grey stones. A complete living room makeover just by using a jar of paint.
Take that drab brown rock and give it new life with a coat of chalky finish paint.

I am looking at doing this project. I have the same stones and it's time for a change. What kind of paint did you use?
