Faux Fireplace

A big question every Christmas is where to hang my stockings. My 200 year old home had been stripped of the original fireplace and there is no money in the budget to put in a real one. My solution is to fake it!

After getting my husband to agree that we NEEDED this, I drew it up on graph paper and went shopping. All our joints were pocketed with a Kreg jig to hide our work and minimize finish work. We started by connecting the 2 1x8 side pieces to the 1x10 top of the fireplace-making a "U" shape.

Turning to the front side we overlaid the two sides with a 1x6, centering it and screwing in place from the backside. A 1x3 was cut to fit over the top plate framing in a small inset section. The sides were built out with 1x2s to give it a bit of a profile and lastly we added a mantle top and a pair of modified corbels we found at an antique store.

After a good sanding and a couple coats of paint we attached it to the wall using a wood cleat made from a piece of 2x4 (from another project) cut in half on the diagonal.

I painted the wall, where the firebox would be, with chalk paint. Chalked in some logs and installed our new fireplace!~
