I gave my rusted and scratched brass fireplace doors in my kitchen an updated look with black spray paint and an iron scroll.
Dated brass doors that were rusted in spots and scratched. I sanded the rusted areas with a fine grit sandpaper then I cleaned them with a mixture of baking soda and water and scrubbed with a brush. I then cleaned the entire door with Windex.
I taped up the glass with painters tape and used paper to cover all exposed areas. In a perfect world I would have removed the doors and painted them outside, but I didn't know how. I waited for a warm day, had all my windows open and wore a mask when I sprayed it. I did a total of 3 coats and waited about 30 minutes between coats.
I added an iron scroll to give it a more ornate look.
I used birch logs for contrast against the black doors and for decoration when fireplace is not in use.
