I have painted brick successfully. If any of the brick area gets hot you will have to buy a heat resistant paint. I painted kitchen walls that had slim brick on them. I had to hand paint them because a roller did not fill in all of the spots. If you have to use two coats of paint my hint is to put smallish pieces of tape two or three brick rows down from where you left off because the already painted areas won't be obvious. If you paint the grout lines a different color from the bricks make sure you do those first and allow them to dry before you apply the paint to the bricks themselves. It is really a pretty easy job -- just time-consuming. The good part is that you can stop and start and know one will know.

If possible, change the look of the area around the brick. Once brick is painted, it is almost impossible to remove the paint. Red prick has character. This may sound crazy, but before long your red brick will be the latest craze.

I'd try whitewashing it first, Myra.
