White wash the stone but leave the grout the color that it is now.

You can stucco over the stones, filling in grooves around stones, making more of a flat surface with the stucco. There is so much you could do after you stucco it, like adding a modern horizontal tile from subway tiles to mosaic tiles or just leave it stuccoed with a bit of texture, painting it after stuccoing it. If you like a cabin feel, you could even build a covering out of reclaimed wood, tongue and groove and do either a horizontal or diagonal pattern, which could look great too.

Just paint it to go with your decor as though it is any wall. As an accent wall (as it must already be) maybe consider painting it a nice ocean blue...various shades would work nicely, even going into the aqua color that's so popular now. Or maybe a nice shade of grey if it picks up a color in the tapestry hanging there. A nice light green might work too. You could use the pic you submitted here and try various colors of paper to search for the best color that might compliment your room and the tapestry.

I really like Janice's idea. Either paint it the wall color to have it blend in with the walls, or make it a statement piece on the wall with a different color that goes with your décor.

I love whitewashing in any color, to give it a nice clean appearance but with a little texture & depth

  • You can paint over it with a masonry paint.

  • OR you could build/have built a Large mantle. I think that wall is gorgeous. Once you have a mantle you could display some drift/beachwood and/or large pieces of shells and dried coral.
