I would have to place the pulleys on the ceiling instead of the wall.
I want to create a hanging mantel over my fireplace because I don't want to drill into the rock. Any suggestions on hardware, like pulleys and rope size? I think I want a live edge on the wood and just one large shelf that goes all the way across. Our home is all beach decor so I want to keep it simple and something that would go with our beach-themed home. I've included a few pics to give you an idea of what I am looking for. I think this will be a fun and very unique project, can't wait for your replies!!!!

I really like this idea, but how do I make it sturdy enough to attach from the ceiling if I there aren't studs available at the points I need? The rope and wood could be quite heavy.

You will need to find the ceiling joists before you start any work. That will determine where you can hang things and what style you can do.
if the ceiling joists are not in the right place you could span them with a board that is attached to the joists. You could then attach your pulleys where you want to on that board. Paint the board the color of the ceiling. Or you could use metal to span the joists, like angle iron. It would be strong.
Might I suggest a ship's wheel, and get creative. No end to the possibilities.
