My fireplace is stone brick and the hearth is a cement slab. It is old looking and doesn't come clean. The slab has stains all over it. Please give me ideas of how to fix it up.

Stacked stone is very popular on the makeover shows. A much simpler method would be a new mantel and whitewashing the stone already there. You could also apply tile to cover the hearth.

    That is a beautiful fireplace!

Not sure what your style is, but if you are pretty sure you want to change it, the easiest thing to first do it try painting it.

I know there are lots of folks out there with strong feelings about painting stone or brick, but I personally love the look of a semi gloss white paint on brick or stone.

You can warm this up with a more substantial mantle. Without having to remove your existing mantle, you can wrap natural wood around it to look like a thick beam.

I think that staining the hearth a dark, rich coffee brown would tie in nicely with the mantle.

    Good luck.

Try paint but it has to be prepped and the correct paint or it will flake.

If you choose to paint the stone there is a paint that Sherwin Williams carries that has Lime in it that is made for brick and stone. You need two coats to achieve the look but it works beautifully.
