Be careful when you remove the fake logs some contain asbestos. It safe enough but could become a problem if they breaks.

We kept our gas fireplace but wanted more efficient so we put in a non-vented insert. Heats the room great and less cost then a vented insert.
If I were you, I'd get a qualified gas guy to cap and turn off the gas.. Keep the gas insert in case you want to reverse the procedure. There should be an electric outlet in the fireplace. Then it's a simple thing to insert the "logs"
