How can I update our mantle and fireplace and put a big tv there?

It feels as if the tv would be too high if up over the fireplace. TVs need to be at eye level or even a touch below. First you need to face the fireplace head on. Figure ways to conceal wires ect. We had our electrician run outlets above mantel and put in a tube to one side to feed other cords and connections. Put sofa. Floating in front of fireplace. Create a seating area

Get some graph paper & draw your room & furniture to-scale. Do several options. If you need to do “paper dolls” then you can figure this out.

The large couch needs to face the fireplace. The loveseat and chairs on the sides. You can search on Pinterest to find ways to hide the wires. Great room and good luck!

Sometimes the first idea is the best idea. I wouldn't put TV over the fireplace because that then becomes a permanent fixture and all future arrangements will be directed at the TV. You have a beautiful room and has good options for different furniture placement in the future. The only thing I would consider is changing the black area rug for something geometric or color.

By all means, mount the tv over the fireplace---you'll be happy to gain that extra wall that is now wasted on a television. Your space above the mantel looks to be generous, so you won't be too concerned with tv size (other than width.). Your room will open up when you arrange the furniture to one focal point instead of two and your eye won't fight over two focal points in the room, fireplace and television. Mount the television on a swivel-tilt bracket and leave about 6 inches from the tv bottom to the mantel. With a swivel/tilt, you can adjust & angle the tv to your preference. Watching television is much "easier on the eye and neck" when viewed from a lower level (think theater). If there isn't a receptacle in the wall over the mantel, you can purchase a small cord cover kit that attaches to the wall, runs along the back of the mantel and then down the side to a wall receptacle and a cable source if necessary. Paint the covers to match the wall & stain to match the fireplace surround down the side. It isn't difficult to disguise the covers and you never notice them. (When I cancelled my cable and went to internet streaming, those cords got gone---great decision!) Of course you can hire someone to redo electrical if you choose---but hiding the cords isn't a hard DIY project---just buy the angle-turns and connect as needed to the long covers.

Because your chairs will be rearranged toward the television/fireplace, you might consider replacing your rug with a larger one that is better scaled to the seating area---maybe a rug that has a subtle pattern to it that adds more interest. Good luck!

Your living room is very cozy.. and in most instances the fireplace is the main focal point in a room, do you really want to make the TV the main focus?

I vote for the TV over the fireplace. One focal point is better than two. You could put two couches facing each other on the sides, then two matching chairs facing the fireplace with a large square cocktail table in the center giving you seating for 8.
