How do I clean up a brick interior chimney?

I have a brick chimney that goes up through the middle of my house. It is in my bedroom that I am currently updating. I have Blues and white as the color theme and the red brick chimney either needs to be cleaned or painted. I get differing opinions regarding what to do. I need to know what products are needed to clean it up or how to paint it without the stains bleeding through.

You could white wash them so they look more weathered. The brick is gorgeous.

Buy Stain Blocker from the paint dept. of you local DIY, then paint using brick and tile paint or emulsion over it and pick out the joints if you so desire in another colour.
