How do I improve this fireplace?

No, usually in old fireplaces, asbestos looks like fur on the inside on the brick of the fireplace. I think the fireplace is really cool.

I would have no idea if there is asbestos in this fireplace. Considering the historic value of the home/fireplace, I would build a wooden facade to place over the stone which would save the stone. You could have a nice mantel built as part of the facade and attach it to the walls on either side of the current fireplace.

Hi Vicki, it it a character! I think you coul really improve the looks by putting a coat of paint on it. I would think it likely does have asbestos based on the age of the house, but painting it will seal it for you, and as long as it is not disturbed by cutting or sanding it, you are safe. You could do a nice solid gray, or white. Just vacuum off loose debris and buy your paint. Paint the mantle a nice contrasting color

I think you should leave it alone no paint no cover up, just have the terrible regrout job done correctly, the age & work of this stone is incredible. Historical.

I'd leave it too and not paint. It is very interesting and historic. I don't know if it has asbestos but wouldn't doubt it. I'd also worry that given its age trying to remove it might cause structural damage to the surround that could be hard to fix.

The only thing your fireplace needs is a professional re-grout job! It's a unique one of a kind and I think the mantle is perfect as well. I'd change my furniture style before I'd change the fireplace, I'd even make it the focal place of the room. Maybe barn wood above the fireplace would give it more height (I like the green color you have on the walls).
