Hi Carla Lee, there are SO many different ways to redo a fireplace. First, decide on how you would like it to look. Here's some ideas from whitewashing to painting and you could also cover it with tiles for a more modern look. Hope some of the pics inspire you!

white washing is a quick, easy and cheap option. We had a massive brick fireplace wall and after 15 or more years I finally took the leap and whitewashed it.

My house came with whitewashed fireplace that looked pink to me, so I'd consider simething like a tan or gray based paint for a wash.
Masonry/Concrete Dye/Stains don't burn and dont peel, if you choose a full coverage solution.
Many people look at painted brick with dusdain, if you're going to sell the house in a few years.
You can white wash it with 50/50 ratio of paint & water. You can use joint compound to do a German Schmear technique. You can trowel concrete onto it to make it look more contemporary.
Some use the veneer air stone to cover the whole fireplace in a simulated stone look. You can also tile the whole thing in large format tiles, I have mine done in travertine 6"x24" porceline tiles in a herringbone pattern for a more modern style and to lighten up the cedar walls that are old original shiplap as the fireplace is 5' wide.

You could paint the mortar and add a glaze. German schmeer is very popular as is tile or paint but those are really big jobs.
