What ever you use, make sure it will be fireproof and will withstand the heat!
Rather than the smear which is not in keeping with the craftsman style of your home, I suggest you tile the fireplace and attach a mantle surround. Incorporate the switch and the plug in the mantle. It will also increase the value of the home. Good luck.

A cheap and good looking alternative is to white wash the bricks. That will give you a more modern look and a lighter look too.
what is unattractive about your fireplace is not the brick or the mantelpiece but the cord for the t.v.! See if you can find a fireplace surround that includes a mantel. The thing with the log like mantels is that they are of the moment. In other words only fitting in certain home styles and environments. You have a craftsman's home. You would probably like decorating in that style too.
