I used chalk paint in three colors using a grey for the grout. Really lighten it up.
Paint it white and add a mantle to it, is what I would do.
Just paint it solid in a lighter color, or use 3 different colors, 2 light and one just a little darker and sponge all of it on to lighten, but give it a little depth also. Don't do splotchy, blend well as you go.
I don't see a mantle in the pic.
