Build Your Own Stacked Crate End Table

I had an idea for an end table, which was two crates stacked on each other. I kept seeing on Pinterest all these cool things people were doing with found crates. My problem was, I couldn't find any crates. It seems like people all over the internet are finding crates and repurposing them. But not me! Yes, I could have bought crates for quite a bit of money, but I couldn't find any. I looked! So I just decided to build them myself.
I basically just looked at a small crate that i had and used some math to try and emulate it, only bigger. It wasn't so hard once I got started!
I used stacked pennies as spacers.
The thing I love about making my own furniture is that you can do whatever you want with it. I really wanted this table to have storage - to make one crate actually usable to hold stuff. So, I added some decorative hinges to the top to have remote storage. I thought about putting the hinges on the inside to save space on the top, but I really like how the hinges looked on top so I went with that. I also really like having a place to throw my computer if someone shows up :). It's always out on the coffee table.
I also had the idea of adding a lamp. I thought it would save a little space on the tabletop and also I could run the cord under the couch and it wouldn't show. I just a lamp kit from Lowes as well as pipes and fittings from the plumbing section.
Head over to the blog for more details, including free building plans. After I designed and built this, Rogue Engineer was kind enough to write up some very easy to follow plans to build your own. Link on the blog!
