Converting a Closet Into a Display Nook

While having an empty nest brings lots of changes, I've leaned that it comes with a few advantages as well. One of those is that we could put our plan to convert what had become a spare bedroom into an upstairs den into action. It's still a work in progress, but one of the best parts of the room is the closet that we converted into a display nook.
The shelves are 12" deep and 1" thick. I used Valspar Ultra Semi Gloss Paint and Primer in One to paint the shelves and the brackets.
The first step was to remove the double doors and tracking. Following that, we removed the metal shelving unit and bar. A coat of paint was added to match the wall color. The white stripe on the wall was painted the same color as the closet walls.
After looking a lots of options, we decided the best look for what we wanted was to go with 9 x 11 inch wooden brackets from Lowes. I painted them white to match the shelves. They give great support and we won't have to worry about any sagging of the shelves.
We made sure to give the space between shelves the height we wanted. We didn't want the same height between the shelves and we wanted a total of six shelves. Lots of measuring ensued! We left a 1/4 each gap between the shelves and the side of the closet walls for easy installation.
We cut a piece of shelving to use as a front for the bottom shelf.
This makes a perfect display nook for displaying my husband's collection of model airplanes. Converting the unused closet into a nook frees up lots of space in the room. More details on how the project can be found on my blog.
