I finished my new DIY Curved Floating Deck earlier this summer and then shortly thereafter I built a new DIY Planter as the first piece of decor for my new hangout space in front of the house. In the center of the planter that I built, I had created a diamond design and decided to incorporate that design element into any new furniture pieces that I built to enhance my new outdoor digs! Which leads me to my newest addition to my new deck space: My DIY Outdoor Sofa!
Here are the abbreviated instructions for how I built this outdoor sofa, for full woodworking plans and additional pictures, please visit my blog at the link at the bottom of this post. First, cut the 2x4 boards to build the frame of the couch and attach together with wood glue and pocket hole screws.
Next I cut the 2x4 and 2x6 boards to build the couch sides and legs. I assembled these using wood glue and a combination of pocket hole screws and exterior wood screws.
Next, attach the seat frame to the sides/legs using exterior wood screws.
Cut the boards for the seat top and attach to the frame with exterior wood screws.
Now, cut the boards to build the seat back of the couch and assemble using pocket hole screws.
Attach the seat back to the couch frame using pocket hole screws and wood glue.
Cut the 2x4 boards to provide support to the seat back and attach with pocket hole screws.
Fill all holes wit wood filler and/or pocket hole plugs, then sand the entire couch until smooth.
Lastly, I applied a weathered accelerator and let dry. I stained the diamonds on each side with a navy stain, then I applied a light coat of white paint to the entire couch, except for the diamond areas, which were taped off prior to painting. I moved the couch onto my deck and now I can sit out there and relax!

Have a question about this project?
Why did you paint it when it appears, from your build photos, that the lounge is of the same design as the planter box in the picture which appears to be left in the natural wood color
Where did you get the pocket screw hole jig?
Great job!! I can't wait to try it! Where did you get your cushions?
