  • We've only had this TV stand for 4 years, but it had plenty of dings and scratches. Moving and toddlers can do a number on furniture, am I right? I really wanted to make the TV stand (let's be honest, it's actually a book shelf) fit in with the rest of our decor. I'm so happy with the aesthetic of this piece, now!
The only thing that you need for this project is sandpaper! You can find this for $1 at Dollar Tree! (or a hardware store, of course) If you want to seal your project, grab a wax or polyurethane as well.
Start with the edges. Don't round them down, just lightly sand them. After you've sanded the edges, sand just beyond them. (the front of the shelf, around the edges)
Sand the corners, and sand around them also. You want the heavier sanding to happen around the edges and corners. Use light strokes, but do more sanding in those areas.
Rough up the fronts. Go with the grain and press gently. Make a few light strokes against the grain, to get a "well used" aged look. Use a fine sandpaper to finish.

Step back to look at your project to see if any more sanding is needed. A little at a time is the safest way to go. If you'd like, you can finish your project with wax or polyurethane.

Was the unit real wood or a laminated fake wood finish? I've got several bookcases that I'd love to redo this way.
