this is an illustrated depiction of how to apply a shellac finish. This sea chest had previously been shellaced. You can not put shellac over any other kind of finish. I was reading posts here and one of them talked about shellac as a finish. It just happened that my husband was applying one, so I thought it would be a good time to illustrate how this is done.
ingredients needed are shellac and linseed oil, a small cloth wadded up over some other rags of cloth.
start applying shellac to cloth
this is about a dime sized drop of shellac, wait till it has been absorbed (seconds)
add a very small drop of linseed oil
dot of oil just visible.
start wiping on surface; keep the cloth in constant motion, can be circular or sweeping. Do not pause on surface. That's it folks! But when you use this method you can not put any other cleaner or wax etc on it.
