How to Transform a Battered End Table Into Decorative Decor

When I originally bought this end table it came with a beautiful hutch and I used it to display candles and other decorative items. Well, that ended quickly when my daughter took the table to use for her beauty products. Along the way, she moved out and left it behind, so I decided to turn it into a plant stand. I didn't want to re-stain it because I wanted to add some color to that space. Check out what I decided to do- I think it looks fab!

It’s all solid wood and is a sturdy piece for sure. I wanted something with some pizzazz to brighten the space especially because it will be a home to some plants.
I started by sanding the entire table. I can't tell you how easy it was to do with my new hand sander. And it was so easy to set up and use. Since it had an old rough finish, I wanted to be sure it had a nice smooth surface before painting.

I started out by adding painters tape in strips across the top. I spaced them about an inch or so apart.

I wanted a pattern under the decoupage, so I thought stripes would look great under the gold flecks pattern.
Once that paint layer dried, I peeled off the painters tape. I then added my other color choices to the entire table. I was aiming for a nice contrast to the blue. I chose a silver-white to the trim to bring out the gold of the decoupage. The stripes are more of a neutral beige again to bring out the gold.

I then added my other color choices to the entire table. I was aiming for a nice contrast to the blue. I chose a silver-white to the trim to bring out the gold of the decoupage. The stripes are more of a neutral beige again to bring out the gold overlay pattern I had in mind.
I purchased some beautiful gold-flecked patterned paper and decided to use this as an overlay for the table top.
Once the table was painted, I then began the process of adding the decoupage to the trim. I started with the ends of the table as I knew that would be the most difficult to add and, I also added some extra glue to the underneath to make sure it would not peel up.
I then painted the entire top of the table with Mod Podge and quickly added the gold paper over top.

Be sure to smooth out the paper and let it dry before trimming the hangover.
Once the top is dry, trim the edges using a guide. A straight razor works great to trim those edges nicely! I also used a level guide to trim the leftover paper and make the edges look neat and sharp.
I then used another layer of Mod Podge to make sure the top and sides were sealed and for another protective layer.
I decided to add decoupage to the table top as well as to the trim.
As you can see, the contrast of colors worked out just right!

I'm thrilled with the end results. I now have a beautifully transformed end table with the details and colors I envisioned.
I love how the gold overlay adds that sassy punch to the table. It's exactly what I was looking for!
I easily paired this end table with one of my refinished old mirrors and wow, it completed the upscaled Farmhouse vignette look I was dreaming of!

I wasn't sure I'd like it, and it isn't my cup of tea, but it turned out way better than I thought it would be. Love the shape of the table. I've got a little table here that got painted yellow (a color I hate) for a former roommate. I've told my wife that I want it repainted, maybe that can get done this year. Doing some decoupage on the top would make this little table pop and I'm learning more about how to keep it from being sticky from the Modpodge.

Watch out for your daughter. When she sees this transformation she's going to want it back. I know I would. Great job!
