I've seen so many awesome projects with the Sugi Ban technique & I've been dying to try it. I had this old fire pit base hanging around in my back yard for years that I wanted to turn into a table & now here is the project.
Here is my old fire pit frame. It was sitting out in my back yard for years, under a tarp. It only had a little bit of rust, surprisingly! So I after buffing that out & cleaning it up, it was ready to paint!
Art Minds turquoise- my first paint color.
Art Minds aquamarine- my 2nd paint color.
Here is the frame after layering first the turquoise & then the aquamarine.
30" wood round, found on Amazon. You can also find these at Lowe's & Home Depot.
2 hole straps, used to attach the wood round to the frame.
Since the wood round is only slightly larger than the frame, I needed to bend one end of these & nail them in on the outside edges & screw on the underneath.
Carpet tacks & Metal screws are what I used to attach the 2 hole straps as described above.
Here is the cute little torch I used & butane of course. I've seen some people use much larger ones with propane, but I prefer these, since I wasn't totally nuking my piece. As you can see in the background, I am mid way through the piece. I didn't go full burn. I wanted to keep alot of the natural wood grain of the piece & just do more of a light texture, as you'll see in the finished photos.
Here is what I used to seal it- only takes one coat! I love this stuff! It dries super fast too!
The finished piece, while we wait for the polycrylic to dry.
Here is the finished piece, back in my living room.
