I bought an outdated solid wood telephone table/chair. I knew it could look better than what it looked like when I bought it, so here goes!
Here it is! The wood was great, but the seat was something to be desired. Not comfy at all. It was covered with a fake leather that had seen better days too! So, I wiped the wood down but it really didn't need any more prep work done to it other than that.
To paint it I used a cottage white chalk paint (that I made myself using 1/3 cup plaster of paris, 1/3 cup water and 1 1/2 cup paint. I painted it 3 times to get good coverage. I did not sand it in between coats because I was going to distress it at the end anyways.
After it dried overnight, I distressed it using a sander. I went pretty light on the distressing, sanding just the edges. This is totally optional to do if you want to. You could keep it the solid look without any sanding at all. I love the distressed look and plus I'm a messy painter and so sanding away some of the runs hides my messiness!
I added a little more padding to the seat and recovered it with this antiquie (is that a word?) fabric. I reattached the seat from the bottom using screws and there you have it.
Here is another view. I thought about stenciling something into the squares but nothing is coming to me at the moment. Maybe I'll "telephone a friend" and see what they suggest!
